At some point during this pandemic I’m sure you’ve thought to yourself, “I need a getaway!” Although we are still amidst a global pandemic, I’m here to tell you it’s okay to get away … it’s just about careful planning.

For our 10 year anniversary we planned to return to our honeymoon spot: Couples Negril, Jamaica.  A pandemic changed those plans, as it has for many.  I’ve heard about so many cancelled international trips, family vacations, weekend getaways, honeymoons, and babymoons.

We may not have gone to Jamaica, but a pandemic didn’t stop me from planning a romantic getaway to celebrate our anniversary … it’s all about planning SMART! I’m here to share my tips on planning a SMART and safe getaway during a pandemic.

How to Plan a SMART and Safe Getaway:

Who doesn’t love an acronym?!  Not gonna lie – I was pretty proud of myself for coming up with this!

S – SOCIALLY DISTANCE

Plan a location and activities that allow you to distance yourself from others.  For example, planning a road trip instead of booking a plane ticket.  Staying in a VRBO instead of a hotel.  Packing a picnic instead of eating at a restaurant.  Renting kayaks instead of visiting a local attraction.  Using a delivery service instead of stopping in the local grocery store.

M – Wear your MASK

Just do it.  If it bothers you to wear a mask, that is even more reason to find a location away from others.  However, if you are planning to visit a brewery, rent a bike, or do anything where you may interact with people please be respectful and wear a mask.

A – AVOID crowded places

This is not the time to plan a trip to a major city.  Think small town, secluded, nature. Get creative and think outside the box … have you ever been camping?  Or ever wanted to rent an RV?  What about staying in a remote cabin on a lake?  Find fun things to do that aren’t major tourist attractions and visit places that you can easily social distance.  Outdoor activities are best such as hiking, biking, boating, golf, etc.

R – Do your RESEARCH

This might be the most important part to ensure you have a fun and safe experience.  Before you visit anywhere check the website and Facebook page for adjusted hours or regulations due to COVID-19.  Doing your do-diligence on location, lodging, restaurants and attractions will ensure you are prepared and able to enjoy your stay.  The last thing you want is to show up to find out it’s closed.

T – TAKE sanitizer with you

Not just hand sanitizer, but surface wipes too.  Get in the habit of taking travel-size hand sanitizer and surface wipes with you wherever you go.  Wipe down surfaces and use hand sanitizer when soap & water are not available.

Important: If you are feeling ill, or have been directly exposed to someone with COVID-19 please do your part and reschedule your travel plans.

Remember, we’re all in this together so we ALL have a social responsibility to stay safe for the sake of others.

I’m excited to share our next trip with you soon.  Until then, safe travels!
