What’s your favorite thing about fall?

For me, it’s the crisp breeze in the air and the leaves changing colors … those first signs of fall! This is typically when I start planning an apple orchard outing.  Ryan and I have been visiting local u-pick farms for years, each year we try to visit a farm we haven’t been to yet.  This year we went to Wood’s Edge Apples in Buffalo, MN (aprox 45 mins from Minneapolis) with my sister and nieces.

Apple picking is fun for all ages! I’m no CDC, but I consider it to be a COVID-safe activity, especially since you can easily socially distance and stay outside.  On a nice Minnesota fall day many farms that offer additional activities (such as hay rides, corn pit, petting zoo, etc.) become popular attractions and can get pretty crowded.  Typically, that would be just the kind of place we’d like to take Micah for a fun day. However, this year we preferred to play it safe and seek out somewhere small and simple.

Earlier this year I requested a copy of the Minnesota Grown Directory.  It’s a great resource for finding local u-pick farms.  Through the directory I was able to find many u-pick farms that offered a variety of apple picking with no entry fee, and only charge per pound picked.  This is great because you can pick a lot or a little!  Together we picked over two dozen large Honeycrisp apples for $35, and split our pickings. I’d say that is totally worth it for a fun afternoon and a bag full of apples!

Wood’s Edge Apples is a super cute place and I highly recommend it! Check out Minnesota Grown Directory to find your local apple growers and find a u-pick farm near you!
